Pilates
(pi-LAH-teez) exercise, performed in the U.S. since the 1920s,
is named after its inventor, Joseph H. Pilates. He was a boxer
and dancer who also studied yoga and Zen meditation.
The method encompasses more than 500 controlled, precise movements,
designed to stretch and strengthen muscle without adding bulk and
improve musculoskeletal function.
The exercises require concentration and deep, coordinated breaths
- working the body and the mind. They focus on the body's vital
energy core (an equal balance of abdominal and lower back musculature)
to build strength and agility in a balanced way. The exercises
are performed on a padded floor mat or with special apparatus such
as the Reformer, Chairs, Cadillac, Barrels, Ped-o-Pul, and Magic
Circle.
